CCTV Remediation Case Study

CCTV System Remediation for a Supported Housing Facility

The property had an existing 14-camera CCTV system that was largely unreliable. Fewer than 60% of the cameras were usable, with severe video lag, dropouts, poor positioning and unsuitable Wi-Fi links.

Project Breakdown

How the CCTV System Was Remediated

Explore the original faults, our assessment, the remediation work and the final reliability improvements delivered across the supported housing facility.

The property had an existing 14-camera CCTV system that was largely unreliable.

Key issues included:

  • Only 7–8 cameras working intermittently
  • Severe video lag and dropouts
  • Poor camera positioning creating blind spots
  • Cameras connected via Wi-Fi links, not designed for continuous video streaming
  • PoE switches installed next to Wi-Fi adapters
  • Network equipment placed in unsuitable locations, including within resident rooms
  • The NVR mounted directly to a wall with no secure network cabinet

The system was not fit for purpose for a supported living environment where reliability and safeguarding are critical.

Following a full system review, it was clear the issue was design and infrastructure, not the cameras themselves.

We designed a proper wired CCTV architecture using Hikvision equipment, prioritising:

  • Stability
  • Safeguarding
  • Minimal disruption to residents
  • Long-term reliability

We carried out a full CCTV remediation over 4 days, including:

  • Running a dedicated cable from each camera directly to the NVR
  • Removing Wi-Fi links from the CCTV network
  • Installing a secure network cabinet to properly house the NVR and networking equipment
  • Utilising the existing 16-channel PoE NVR, connecting all cameras directly to its PoE ports
  • Removing as much legacy cabling as possible without disturbing residents
  • Relocating switches that had been installed inside resident rooms
  • Repositioning all 14 cameras to achieve correct coverage and eliminate blind spots
  • All 14 cameras fully operational
  • Stable 24/7 recording across the entire site
  • Zero video lag or dropouts
  • Improved coverage and safeguarding
  • No reliance on Wi-Fi for critical CCTV infrastructure
  • Clean, secure and professional installation

Previously, fewer than 60% of cameras were usable. After remediation, the system now operates at 100% reliability.
