Burglar Alarms Guide

Can my existing burglar alarm be upgraded?

Find out what can sometimes be retained, when a panel change helps and why compatibility matters more than age alone.

The short answer

Often, an existing burglar alarm can be improved without replacing every component. The sensible route depends on its condition, available access details, manufacturer support and the features you want. Test and assess it before deciding what to keep.

Start with what you want to change

Perhaps the alarm works but the keypad is awkward. Perhaps you want an additional detector, different part-setting arrangements or supported phone control. A fault and a missing feature are different problems; identify which you are trying to solve.

Write down how you use the property: who arrives first, which areas stay occupied and whether pets move around while the system is set. A replacement panel will not automatically correct a detector aimed at the wrong part of a room or an entry route that does not fit your routine.

What might be retained?

  • Cabling: existing detector and keypad routes may be useful if the cables are sound and suitable for the new arrangement.
  • Detectors: some may be retained where their type, condition and electrical requirements are compatible.
  • Sounders and power equipment: these need assessing rather than assuming that all older parts can be connected to a new panel.
  • Controls and communications: these are often the parts that need changing to achieve newer functions.

A wired detector, a wireless detector and a bus-connected device are not interchangeable simply because they perform a similar job. Wireless devices in particular normally need to belong to a supported product family. Compatibility must be established from the actual equipment.

Three possible upgrade routes

Match the work to the condition and requirement
RouteWhen it may fit
Service & adjustThe core system is supportable and the issue is a fault, configuration or everyday usability.
Partial upgradeA panel, keypad, communications module or selected devices can deliver the agreed change while suitable parts remain.
ReplacementSupport, compatibility, condition or accumulated faults make retaining the existing arrangement impractical.

A hybrid design can combine supported wired and wireless components. That can be useful where the main building is already cabled but a new area would be difficult to wire. The panel’s capabilities and radio conditions still need checking.

Phone control and monitoring are different

An app can offer useful controls or notifications on supported equipment. It does not automatically provide a monitoring service or an agreed response to an activation. Ask exactly what a proposed communications upgrade does and who receives an alert.

Check internet or mobile-network requirements, subscriptions, access permissions and what happens if the normal connection fails. If an insurer has specified requirements, share them before equipment is selected so that the proposal can be checked against them.

Newer controls should make the alarm easier to use, rather than adding features that nobody understands. Practise setting, unsetting and any part-setting arrangements at handover.

Prepare for an assessment

A photo of the keypad and visible model labels, the approximate age and a description of the problem are useful. Tell us whether you have the normal operating code and any paperwork. Do not post access codes in an enquiry or open the control panel to look inside.

If the original installer is unavailable, see our takeover and upgrade service. We assess the equipment and available access before agreeing what can be supported.

After an upgrade, maintenance still matters. Sensor batteries, panel backup batteries and bell batteries have different roles. WESEC maintenance plans include replacement sensor batteries; panel and bell batteries are not included in maintenance. Our alarm installation page explains the design, installation and handover process.
